Dr. Dendy Engelman's Expert Advice
Products to Use at Every Age
While there’s no way to really reverse aging, there are key things to do at every age to help slow the process.
6 Tips to Get More Glowy Skin
The effect that we recognize as "glowy" skin is a combination of a few different factors: hydration, smoothness, good circulation, and no dead skin cell buildup.
Dr. Dendy Engelman's Tips
Add Antioxidants
Antioxidants are crucial in preventing free radical damage and reversing signs of aging. Free radicals are destructive, unstable compounds that search for other molecules that they can “steal” electrons from to complete themselves. Once they do, it leaves those molecules unstable, and those molecules then search for missing electrons from other sources. This causes a domino effect that weakens the skin barrier and leads to premature aging. Antioxidants can help prevent visible signs of aging by pairing with free radical scavengers in search of a missing electron, thus neutralizing the damage on the surface before it affects your skin. Product recommendation: NOW® Solutions Vitamin C + Ferulic Acid Serum.
Help Retain Moisture
Humectants, like hyaluronic acid, help the skin retain moisture, which becomes more difficult as we age. Product recommendation: NOW® Solutions Hyaluronic Acid Firming Serum.
Use Body Oils to Lock In Moisture
One of the best ways to keep the skin on your body hydrated is to lock in the moisture from your shower. Instead of drying completely, allow your skin to remain slightly damp and apply a body oil within the first few minutes of finishing your shower. Look for nourishing oils like avocado oil, castor oil, or arnica oil.
Don’t Forget Your Scalp!
t may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget that your scalp is skin, too. If you are experiencing a dry scalp, incorporate a nourishing oil into your care routine. I love argan oil for its rich fatty acid content. Product recommendation: NOW® Solutions Argan Oil.
Give Your Skin the Right Nutrition, Inside and Out
Skincare is meant to penetrate the skin barrier to target specific skin concerns, eliminating toxins and providing nutrients to maximize cellular processes. Obviously, the skin is the largest organ on the body, so ensure you’re maintaining a well-balanced diet with plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, and leafy greens.
Refresh Throughout the Day
I personally love keeping a hydrating facial mist on my desk for a quick refresh throughout the day to keep my skin moisturized. Especially those of us who spend a lot of time at desks or indoors with the dry heat or air conditioning can benefit from this. Product recommendation: NOW® Solutions Rosewater Rejuvenating Mist.
Get Plenty of Sleep!
Yes, sleep impacts the appearance of our skin. Ensure you are getting plenty of high quality rest each night to make sure your skin looks its best.
Establish a Skincare Routine that Works for You, and Stick to It
Caring for your skin every day - whether you prefer a 10-step regimen or the bare minimum - is key for beautiful skin in the short term and younger-looking skin in the long term. A low-maintenance skincare routine should include, at minimum, cleanser, moisturizer and SPF.
Limit Sun Exposure and Use SPF
This is one piece of advice that I have and will always tell my patients: protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun! Free radical damage from UV rays accelerates your skin’s aging process over time and puts you at risk of skin cancer - not to mention that sunburn can cause painful redness and peeling. Make sure to apply a high-quality SPF product every day - even in the winter!
Avoid Smoking and Tanning
Nicotine may contribute to wrinkles and premature aging because it causes blood vessels to constrict, which reduces oxygen flow and nutrients to skin cells. As a result, your skin becomes more prone to drying out and scarring. Plus, frequent smokers often develop fine lines around their mouth (appropriately known as “smoker’s lines”). And although tanning can give you the appearance of a healthy glow, in the long term, it leads to premature wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and other signs of aging - and at worst, could even give you melanoma, which is extremely dangerous.
Cleanse Skin Daily
Every night use a double-cleansing ritual. Step one: remove the day's make-up, grime and dirt with a nutrient-rich towelette or makeup remover. Step two: draw out sebum and bacteria using a gentle oil cleanser and lukewarm water. Oil eliminates impurities without drying out your skin. Product recommendations: NOW® Solutions Blemish Clear Gel Cleanser, NOW® Solutions Soothing Rose Facial Cleansing Oil.
Hydrate!
Proper hydration is the key to achieving skin that is both healthy and beautiful. Drink plenty of water, apply products that contain hydrating ingredients, and run a humidifier to keep your home environment at an ideal humidity level and prevent transepidermal water loss (loss of moisture through the skin barrier).
