More About Tea Tree Oil
Herbal goodness from down under
Australia is known for many things including kangaroos, Aborigines, the Sydney Opera House, and shrimp on the barbie. Australia is also home to one of the more impressive trees to grace Mother Earth – the tea tree, which is where we get our tea tree oil from!
What is a tea tree?
Tea tree is the common name for Melaleuca alternifolia, a species of tree native to the Land Down Under that’s deeply woven into the indigenous Aboriginal culture and the history of Australia. In fact, during World War II, Australian soldiers were issued a bottle of tea tree essential oil as part of their standard first aid kit.
How to use tea tree oil safely
NOW® Essential Oils is proud to be a part of The Australian Tea Tree Industry (ATTIA). The ATTIA logo ensures consumers that Code of Practice (CoP) accredited pure, regulated, traceable, safe, unadulterated Australian Tea Tree Oil is being used in NOW® Essential Oil products.
Tea tree oil aromatherapy is a great way to enjoy the benefits of this natural oil. In addition, pure tea tree oil has a variety of uses:
- Breathe deeply – Add tea tree oil to a diffuser to help you breathe easier, or use with steam inhalation to help clear the air for easy breathing. Simply add a few drops of the best tea tree oil to a bowl of steaming-hot water, cover your head with a towel or other thick cloth, and breathe normally for several minutes.
- Maintain good hygiene – Putting a drop of tea tree oil on your toothbrush can help keep it fresh longer or use toothpaste with tea tree already incorporated in a safe formula. You can also put a drop or two on your dish sponge to maintain freshness.
- Surface cleaning – Combine one drop of tea tree oil per cup of water in a spray bottle to help clean bathroom and kitchen surfaces.
- Freshen up your clothing – A drop or two of tea tree oil added during a laundry wash cycle will have your clothes smelling remarkably fresh without leaving any actual tea tree aroma. It will also help to keep your washing machine clean.
You may have noticed none of these uses are internal, and for good reason. Tea tree oil is not for internal use, and can be toxic if ingested. For more information on essential oil safety, please review our FAQs.
